Saint-Gervaisin 360°

On the western hills above Rouen, the Church of Saint-Gervais preserves a crypt of the 4th century, considered one of the oldest Christian structures in France. Its Gallo-Roman walls, its niches and its stone altar carry sixteen centuries of history: Christian worship was celebrated here before Rouen ever became the capital of the dukes of Normandy.

It was at the priory of Saint-Gervais, which once stood on this spot, that William the Conqueror died on 9 September 1087, injured during the siege of Mantes. The Duke of Normandy who had become King of England dictated his last wishes here, dividing his lands between his sons, before being buried at the Abbaye aux Hommes in Caen.

The site is therefore a key stop on Guillaume 360, the platform JUUMO is preparing for the millennium of the Conqueror's birth: from Falaise, where he was born around 1027, to Hastings and Westminster, and finally to this hill in Rouen where his life ended.

The present church, rebuilt in the 19th century in a Neo-Romanesque style, still stands guard over the crypt. From the Saint-Gervais hill the view runs across the rooftops, the spires and the hills of the Seine valley, a panorama the virtual tour will capture in full 360.
